The song you’re most proud of…

“F16″. FrankMusik and I worked really meticulously on every instrument used, so I’m proud of every inflection, articulation and lyric. The rap is fast and the chorus is huge. I like the surprise factor it comes with – my face doesn’t match up with the girth of F16’s sound. I love that. Jaws drop = success.

Best concert you’ve ever been to…

The Cure, when I was 9, and again at Coachella. They lifted my soul for 4 hours straight. I was in heaven, or should I say “something like heaven”. I’ve also been to a gang of WuTang shows and they blow my mind every time. I am not drawn to choreography or new age effects. I love when an artist just articulates who they are, simple and fantastic. Morrissey was brilliant, Suzanne Vega with a guitar on Santa Monica Pier, Shakira standing 5 feet tall in the corner of a huge stage in Vegas by herself shaking her perfectly sculpted bum. Lil Wayne, Kanye West singing “Mama”. A good performance can stop time, and spark those rare occasions when you’re completely in the moment, that’s what I like to call “Primo” and it’s what I strive for.

Your favorite thing to do on a rainy day is…

Eat ice cream! Mint Chip, on the beach, listening to Talking Heads. I also used to love playing tennis in the rain, although it can be slippery and dangerous, it’s way worth it.

What movie could you watch a thousand times?

“Austin Powers Gold Member”, and I have! Also, classics like “The Godfather”, “Pulp Fiction” and “Scarface”. Will Farrell movies and current classics like “The Hangover”.

What TV shows can you not stand to miss?

I love “United States of Tara”, but they are canceling it! ! ! So I am heartbroken. I love “Modern Family”, “Seinfeld” and “Friends”. What ever happened to “Boardwalk Empire”? I was really into it.

Celeb crushes?

Mila Kunis. Although my mixtape “Sex Sells Stay Tooned” clearly screams “Justin Bieber”!

Whose style do you love?

People who aren’t trying to be anything they are not – They embrace themselves and constantly thrive to be better. I love that.

One thing you can’t live without?

Unfortunately the honest answer would be my cell phone. Luckily Family, Cell, and my dog Pacino are my life. I can’t live without my yogurt soup either #StrangeTruth.

Best/worst rumor you’ve heard about yourself…

Worst rumor was in Star Magazine. I think gossip is silly and rumors are stupid. They aren’t really a part of my world – I don’t hear or see them, it’s not even intentional. I’m just immune to it all, like an ongoing unpleasant scent or a barking dog; I am unphased and uninterested.

Craziest thing you’ve ever done to impress a guy/girl…

Jumped a fence barefoot and chased after his car on harsh asphalt to apologize after I hurt his feelings. He never stopped, kept driving, so I grabbed some shoes, hopped in the car and beat him to his own apartment, (which involved breaking numerous driving laws). It impressed him, so he forgave me. (laughing)

What are you most excited for this year?

My music! I can’t wait for my album to come out, to make more music videos, to see where these songs take me! I am excited to inspire people especially kids, to positively influence on this crazy underdog journey to the top!

We can’t get enough of these guys, so we were stoked when we had the chance to catch up with lead singer Alex Gaskarth about some of his favorite things.  We love how honest he was with his answers…and that he has smooth skin!  Check it out below.

The song you’re most proud of?

Such a tough question to answer– I’m proud of almost every song we’ve ever put out because they’re a recollection of a time, a place, and a state of mind that we were in when we wrote the song. That being said, there are some songs we’re just not proud of writing. We’ll sit back and wonder, “what the hell were we thinking?” But I guess in the end its a learning process… You’ve gotta make mistakes in order to grow.

I’m gonna simplify this answer and say Dear Maria, Count Me In– It’s the first single we’ve released to ever go gold, and that says something to me. It’s like having children; we love them all, but this one just walked an old lady across the street.

Best concert you’ve ever been to?

To date, my favorite concert was Imogen Heap at the 930 club. She’s soooo immensely talented, and yet so genuine and real. Very admirable and touching live.

Your favorite thing to do on a rainy day is…

Sit at home, drink wine, listen to some good music, and play video games.

What movie could you watch a thousand times?

Leon, otherwise known as The Professional; It’s a Luc Besson movie, and I’m a huge fan of this one in particular, as well as The 5th Element, which I’ve sort of exhausted at this point.

Nivea for men face lotion. Gotta have smooth skin!

What TV show can you not stand to miss?

I haven’t really been following any series’ as of late, but when Walking Dead was on, I couldn’t get enough; Season 2 is coming up shortly. A new HBO series, Game of Thrones also has me using my DVR a lot. It’s so hard to keep up with TV on tour.

Mila Kunis. Can I have her number?

Whose style do you love?

Gwen Stefani– I don’t wear women’s clothes (very often,) but if I did, I’d bite her style for sure.

Music.

Best rumor I ever heard about myself involved me dating Taylor Swift… Kinda wished it were true.

Craziest thing you’ve ever done to impress a guy/girl?

I’ve lost count of the dumb things I’ve done to impress girls. I’m a showoff.

What are you most excited for this year?

Our new album release, and eventual world domination as a result.

I love song writing soooo much its tough to pick the one I am most proud of!  I think right now I would say “So Obvious” because it’s the first single of our new record and hopefully it opens the door to new fans of the band!

1.       You guys recently released a live album. Is the live element something you really want to convey to fans?

A- 100%, playing live in front of an audience is instant gratification…kinda like Chinese Take-out. Its also where we get to make people forget about their day for a few hours and let go. Making an album can sometimes be a lot of work, touring it after is the big pay-off for us and the fans who come join the nighly sing-along.

2.       What is the main difference between the Canadian music scene and American?

A- I guess one of the major differences is land mass. Canadian towns can be long drives apart, so not only do you have to bust your hump and scrounge gas money to the next gig that’s a day and a half away but it also breeds very different scenes within the country. The east coast not only has a traditional music, but also a thriving rap scene. Montreal is hip diverse with punk, electro and indie rock. Great country music comes from Alberta and some of the best metal and hardcore lives in Vancouver. Being a bilingual country also means there is a huge French music business in Quebec. The greatest thing about music though, is that it is a universal language that everyone can understand, no matter where you live on the third rock spinning around the giant ball of gas.

3.       Who is the band’s biggest influence (musically, spiritually, philosophically, etc)?

A- We all like a lot of different things. Tom is a huge Tomahawk fan but also is into old country. Chris is big into old motown and Strapping Young Lad, Jake is our hip hop, reggae guru who has a wide taste and loves experimenting with different styles within our tunes. I like a lot of the 80’s, The Police, U2, The Jam. When we are writing together we each try and help the other communicate what he’s trying to bring to a song. We meet in the middle and it becomes Hedley. Our dads are all a big influence on us. Same as us, our dads are all different but very strong and good men. We all have big shoes to fill.

4.       What bands were you in before joining Hedley?

A- I grew up in a small logging town eight hours north of Vancouver. We didn’t have a garage so I instead had a Car Port Band. That means all the neighbors were treated to a nightly rehearsal. I played in a few cover bands after highschool, one was an 80’s Hair cover band, but we also did Tom Sawyer, Radar Love, and Ballroom Blitz. My first original band from Vancouver had a part in the Mandy Moore, Malcauly Culkin movie “Saved”. We were the band at the prom playing The Replacements. I played with Tom an Chris in another band right before we formed Hedley. We saw Jake play at a club and all agreed that we wanted him to be our singer. Luckily he had seen us play and wanted us to be his band. Stars aligned and the seas parted. We bonded over beers and here we are making music together today.

5.    What was the first album you bought?

My mom bought “Slippery When Wet” for my birthday one year on cassette but my first Compact Disc or CD (we used to call them) was Smashing Pumpkins “Siamese Dream”. The very first record I got in the mail….I must have been 3 was The Fraggles “Down in Fraggle Rock”

6.       Any New Year’s resolutions for 2011?

A- Cigarettes are bad for me and this is my year. That and write song kick ass tunes for Record No. 4 so the kiddies can get their rocks off.

7.       Where is the band’s favorite place to play?

A- We always enjoy the weird and interesting gigs. Whether its a mall, bowling alley, campfire, a stage built on water or a field in the middle of the Masai Mara in Kenya. One of the best parts of being a band is taking our music everywhere to as many people as possible. Doesn’t matter where it is. We’ll show up with our instruments and make it happen. How’s that for not picking favorites and pissing off every city I failed to mention.
Ok……..MooseJaw, Saskatchewan. Actually, I don’t think we’ve played there yet. It’s going on the list.

Haha, you know whats funny…the first concert I went to was a Beach Boys concert after a baseball game with my family….I freakin’ loved it and I was probably 6 years old!

Your favorite thing to do on a rainy day i?

Sleep in….then I like to go to the beach.  I know it sounds backwards, but watching it rain on the beach is kinda neat….I guess I like to go to the beach no matter what though!

What movie could you watch a thousand times?

I Love You Man.  That movie gets better each time!

–Yeah, that would have to be my bathing suit.  I’m always wearing it around the house….I like being comfortable…plus it just makes me prepared for the impromptu jacuzzi sesh!

Entourage.  My friends and I are obsessed with that show.  Now its become Boardwalk Empire….HBO is still holding down the fort on the best series!

Show me a hot blonde girlie, and I’ll show you my A game.  haha…kidding, I don’t really have a celeb crush.  I kinda go for the “girl nextdoor”.

I’ve done some pretty crazy things for the ladies haha but I would have to say the craziest is going off a 20 ft jump on my snowboard to impress this one girl I liked. It didn’t work to well cause I got broke when I landed, but it was worth the try!

What are you most excited for this year?

To release my 2nd single and for my album to be in stores!!

Best/worst rumor you’ve heard about yourself? When I was 17, I was linked to be dating Miss World. It wasn’t true but my friends in school thought it was pretty cool. I played it cool… I don’t kiss and tell.

Craziest thing you’ve ever done to impress a girl? Pretended I could ski to impress my girl who is a great skier. Let’s just say it ended with a bruised buttocks and ego.

What are you most excited for this year? Traveling America singing my songs and the RYDER CUP.

When the Australian band decided to break through in the U.S., founding members, vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Shimon Moore and his high school classmate, bassist Emma Anzai, simply picked up and moved lock, stock and guitar amps to L.A., advertised for a drummer on Craigslist, and were soon joined by Orange County native Mark Goodwin. After getting signed and putting out their debut, the trio made their own video independently to accompanying the first single, “All the Same,” shot in a Sydney shopping mall in which fellow Aussie Juan Mann held up a hand-written placard offering passersby “Free Hugs.” The clip attracted over 43 million views on YouTube alone, and spawned a world-wide phenomenon.

Three years later, Sick Puppies are back with a new album called Tri-Polar that reflects the past four whirlwind years spent in the rock and roll fast lane, on the grueling tour grind, honing their chops until they were a finely tuned powerhouse ready to let loose with the anger, frustration and triumphs built up from all that road work.

We were so intrigued with this band (and we think that you’ll like them too)  that we asked lead singer Emma to fill out our questionnaire.  We dig that she is such a rocker chick but still has some of the same girly favorites that we do.
