Fight or Flight is the perfect blend of Emily’s classic rock influences and state-of-the-art electropop.  “I don’t want to write songs that are just surface-deep,” explains Emily, whose own favorites growing up included Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Monkees, the Doors and Herman’s Hermits, as well as modern groups like The Pixies and Massive Attack. “I want to be in a world where I’m making the kind of music I want to make, and that’s what I’m doing right now,” she explains about the album. “I want to find a balance between Top 40 songs like ‘Lovesick’ and ‘Let’s Be Friends’ and more complex material like ‘Marisol’ and ‘You Get Me Through’” – the latter of which was written by Emily for her mother, whom she credits with giving her her love of music.  “I’ve given 1000% to making this album,” she says. “I won’t settle for mediocrity.”

The song you’re most proud of?

1 800 Clap Your Hands.  It was the first song I ever wrote for the record and I still feel to this day it is the reason I chose the style of music I did and it is the zenith of Fight or Flight.

Radiohead 2009 at the Hollywood Bowl.

Your favorite thing to do on a rainy day is?

Spend all day inside with a person I love. I love sleeping in side with the rain outside.

Best/worst rumor you’ve heard about yourself? When I was 17, I was linked to be dating Miss World. It wasn’t true but my friends in school thought it was pretty cool. I played it cool… I don’t kiss and tell.

Craziest thing you’ve ever done to impress a girl? Pretended I could ski to impress my girl who is a great skier. Let’s just say it ended with a bruised buttocks and ego.

What are you most excited for this year? Traveling America singing my songs and the RYDER CUP.

When the Australian band decided to break through in the U.S., founding members, vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Shimon Moore and his high school classmate, bassist Emma Anzai, simply picked up and moved lock, stock and guitar amps to L.A., advertised for a drummer on Craigslist, and were soon joined by Orange County native Mark Goodwin. After getting signed and putting out their debut, the trio made their own video independently to accompanying the first single, “All the Same,” shot in a Sydney shopping mall in which fellow Aussie Juan Mann held up a hand-written placard offering passersby “Free Hugs.” The clip attracted over 43 million views on YouTube alone, and spawned a world-wide phenomenon.

Three years later, Sick Puppies are back with a new album called Tri-Polar that reflects the past four whirlwind years spent in the rock and roll fast lane, on the grueling tour grind, honing their chops until they were a finely tuned powerhouse ready to let loose with the anger, frustration and triumphs built up from all that road work.

We were so intrigued with this band (and we think that you’ll like them too)  that we asked lead singer Emma to fill out our questionnaire.  We dig that she is such a rocker chick but still has some of the same girly favorites that we do. The song you’re most proud of? Every song that I write holds a place in my heart, but if I had to pick my favorite, I would have to say “Love is Strong”.  It’s about questioning yourself and being upset after losing someone who’s close to you, but then realizing that no matter where that someone is, your love for them will always be there.

Best concert you’ve ever been to? I went to a Taylor Swift concert last year in Minneapolis.  Best 2 hours of my life <3

Your favorite thing to do on a rainy day is? I love to be outside while it’s raining.  Most people like to stay inside and watch a movie or something, but I think it’s good to take advantage of a rainy day and enjoy the uncommon weather.

The album you’ve got on repeat? The most recent album I’m listening to is “An Airplane Carried Me to Bed” by Sky Sailing.  It’s an acoustic album, but it hits home for me.

What movie could you watch a thousand times? Land of the Lost.

Fav beauty product in your repertoire? Couldn’t live without my FHI hair straightener.

What TV show can you not stand to miss? I mostly watch shows on HBO such as Entourage, True Blood, Dexter, etc.  Can’t miss those ones!

Whose style do you love? I love everyone’s style.  What a person wears and how they hold themselves together is what makes them a unique person.

One thing you can’t live without? I couldn’t live without my iPhone.  I do everything on that thing.  There’s even a guitar app!

Best/worst rumor you’ve heard about yourself? Best rumor was that “Hey Stephen” by Taylor Swift was written about me. Worst rumor was that “Stephen” by Ke$ha was written about me.

Craziest thing you’ve ever done to impress a guy/girl? The girl I liked was at one of my shows once, and I changed the words at the end of my last song and asked her out on stage.  Good times

What are you most excited for this year? I’m excited to release all of the new music I’ve been working on and to tour again!  I miss performing.

Now, three years later, the band is ready for a fresh start.  The band changed their name to Sons of Sylvia (in honor of their mother) and wrote over 300 songs, combining the best parts of pop, country, and rock music to create their genre-defying debut album, Revelation. Alex says of his album – which charts the course of a relationship from start to finish – “It’s definitely about my own struggle, but I think everyone can relate to what I’ve been through from experiences in their lives. I think everything I’m talking about on the record is pretty universal. And knowing now that I’m writing for different cultures, with fans around the world, it’s important that what I’m writing about is generalized enough that people can take the songs in their own way.”

Citing influences from from Blink 182 to Prince, Allstar Weekend enlisted the help of three heavy-hitting producers to capture their sound: Howard Benson (Daughtry, My Chemical Romance), John Feldmann (Goldfinger, Good Charlotte), and S*A*M & Sluggo (Cobra Starship, Metro Station).  High energy pop-punk from start to finish, Suddenly is already #5 on the iTunes Rock Chart and features the smash singles “A Different Side of Me,” which hit number one on the Radio Disney Countdown, and “Dance Forever,” the video for which debuted at number two on the iTunes video chart.

We were super pumped that the adorable Nathan, Cameron, Michael and Zach could chat with us about some of their favorite things on the day their debut album hit stores.  Check out what they had to say below, and be sure to pick up Suddenly on iTunes.

The song you’re most proud of?

Nathan: . I would say that I’m the most proud of the song “Dance Forever”. We’ve had that song for about 3 years, and it was written in my bedroom when i was 16 years old.

Cameron: I am most proud of the song Dance Forever. That song has been a part of the band for almost three years now and in my opinion it is still one of our greatest songs to date!

Michael: A Different Side of Me

Zach: The song I’m most proud of on Suddenly is “Amy”.  It’s the song that made my dad a believer.

Best concert you’ve ever been to?

Nathan: The best concert I’ve been to was the Robert Plant concert(my first concert) in downtown San Diego.

Cameron: I’ve been to so many great concerts it’s really hard to pick out just one to call my favorite, but I can tell you about two that I really enjoyed. Number one is Jack Jonhson, I went with my dad and it was at the Cricket Wireless amphitheater in San Diego, and number two was Taylor Swift at the Staples Center in LA. My manager took me to that one for my birthday two years ago and it was a GREAT show.

Michael: Usher

Zach: The Format at Soma San Diego on their Dog Problems tour… amazing.

Your favorite thing to do on a rainy day is?

Nathan: My favorite thing to do on a rainy day, is to write on an acoustic guitar in my room.

Cameron: My favorite thing to do on a rainy day is stay inside and read a good book or watch a movie with the family.

Michael: Stay in, open the windows, relax, and listen to the rain

Zach: Read, watch movies, and write songs

Nathan: The album I have on repeat is, MGMT’s brand new album “Congratulations”.

What movie could you watch a thousand times?

Nathan: The movie that I could watch a thousand times is, “Almost Famous”.

Cameron: I could easily watch the movie “The Grinch” over and over and over again. Jim Carey ALWAYS cracks me up.

Michael: A Goofy Movie, Iron Giant

Zach: I’ve seen “Garden State” like a million times, and “Lord of the Rings” and “Star Wars” are timeless.

Nathan: My favorite article of clothing in my closet, would be my black jacket that i got at Urban Outfitters.

Cameron: My favorite article of clothing in my closet is Commune Jean Jacket, it makes any outfit look amazing.

Nathan: The TV show that i can’t stand to miss is, Entourage.

Nathan: Craziest thing I’ve ever done to impress a girl, was when i bought a Juicy Couture purse with my own money. And i never spend a lot of money on girls.

Cameron: Fortunately I haven’t done anything too crazy to impress a girl. 

Michael: Sang a song to her in front of an audience of people

Zach: Sang to them.  It’s way more awkward than singing to an audience.

What are you most excited for this year?

Nathan: The thing I’m most excited for is touring.

Cameron: I’m most excited for touring and meeting new fans

Lolene’s electro-pop stylings (which she describes as “awkward pop”) can be heard on her new song “Rich (Fake it Til You  Make It),” the lead single from her forthcoming  major label debut.
