Every now and then a show pops up that you want to hate with every fiber of your being, but no matter how hard you try you just can’t. Life Unexpected was supposed to be that show. It just seemed natural to dislike it because the premise was so unnatural (without being supernatural). Did that even make sense?
What we are trying to say is that Life Unexpected is about Lux, a 15 year-old girl (she turns 16 right away) who, as a baby, was given up for adoption by her teen mother and teen father. After being bounced around foster families for her entire upbringing Lux formulates a plan to become emancipated from the system, thus granting her the freedom to do whatever the heck she pleases. Well, Lux’s big plan hit a speedbump when she needed her biological parents signatures before she could go in front of the judge who would hopefully grant her that emancipation (kinda like a divorce) that she so desperately wanted. As luck would have it Lux found her 30-something year-old parents — Baze, a fratish bar owner, and Cate, a morning radio jockey (who Lux had been listening to nearly her entire life). The surprises just keep coming for the newly reunited family when the judge brings any plans Lux hat to a screeching halt, instead granting Cate and Baze temporary custody of Lux. And without going into much more detail about the show (no one likes a spoiler) the crux of the series is really the unexpected life the three find themselves in from here on out.
So what’s to hate? Lux is a smart, stylish, blonde 15 year-old girl who is as cute as can be. Cate is a beautiful, successful, local celebrity and Baze is a hunky bachelor who lives above a bar. It just seemed too perfect from the start. Yes, we know it’s TV but come on … couldn’t one of them be at least deaf in one ear?!?! Unfortunately no premature hearing loss is to be found on the CW, just a heart warming family drama. Ugh.
Life Unexpected is just that, unexpected. And even with a premise we’d love to hate we couldn’t be happier to have found a great new show!
